I moved from Northampton to the Peak District in 2021 and we had said that we would get a dog as soon as we moved here, so in early summer 2021 we got a Cockapoo puppy. I had no idea how often she would need grooming, therefore unfortunately due to little education about a cockapoos coat my then one year old cockapoos coat became matted resulting in a groomer having to skin her. I was gutted and decided that I would look into where I could go and learn to manage her coat myself. After a brief look on google I came across Sue Oliver dog grooming and although this was a 90 minute journey from me something about her website and Facebook page stood out to me. I sent an email and booked onto a taster day to learn the basics of coat management and clipping. The day course was fab and informative and I left buzzing. I was able to clip a dog from just that days training and after leaving I went on eBay bought myself a table and some secondhand clippers and went round a few local groomers nearby and asked if I could shadow them to learn more.
After some thought and being in between jobs I thought more and more about dog grooming and how I could fit it in around my two young sons. In summer 2022 I decided to sign up for the 20 week course with Sue Oliver to become a dog groomer and proceeded to spend the next 5 months travelling one day a week to complete my Certified Professional groomer course. In December 2022 I got my qualification and set up my grooming room in my converted garage where I gradually grew my business.
I initially started clipping about one dog a day but this quickly grew and I stayed working at home till March 2024. 15 months later I had built my business up from clipping 5 dogs a week to 18 dogs a week and needing a helper! I started to look at business premises as felt the need for more space and I enquired about a property and was added to a wait list to view it. However a few days later I was contacted by the agency stating that the landlord liked my business idea and jumped me to the top of the list and I viewed the property two days later. I felt that this was the right decision for me and my business and moved in the property in March this year and by May this year I have closed my books to new clients as I couldn’t keep up with the demand. Word of mouth had caught on in my local area and my consistency had paid off and my passion for my work spoke for itself.
I now have two regular bathers each doing a day a week and one will become my apprentice after the summer. I have just started entering competitions against other groomers and attend workshops for further training and to continue my learning. Hand on heart it is the best decision I ever made!! Sue is a firm but fair educator, knowledgeable and between her and Jess I felt I gained exactly what I needed from the course to build an amazing business. I know when the times right I’ll be back to complete my next qualification with Sue and her team.
I chose to start my dog grooming career in 2022 when I started my dog grooming course with Sue Oliver Dog Grooming where I completed my City & Guilds Level 2 and Certified Professional Groomer. I have also recently completed my City & Guilds Level 3 with Sue!
From start to finish Sue has been the best from explaining all the different information when choosing the right courses at the start too being there every step of the way and helping me with anything I needed! Both Sue and Jess helped to make sure each student gets the most from the course by answering all of the questions I asked and always giving the best advice, tips and tricks in supportive and professional manner!
Sue and Jess give the best experience if you want to learn to become a dog groomer in a hands on practical and highly professional environment and with an almost 1-1 experience, giving you all the essential skills.
When it came to deciding to go ahead with my Level 3, Sue made sure that it all worked around my day to day life and also my business I had set up as a dog groomer! It was very personalised with Sue offering individual support and attention, which is something I wouldn’t have got if I had gone to a college!
After completing my Level 2 and my CPG I felt I had all the necessary skills and resources I needed to set up my own business. After 6 months of being open I was and still am completely fully booked! This is all down to the amazing experience I had with Sue who imparted her expertise and knowledge at all levels. I hope to continue learning and complete some more courses which would always be with Sue as it’s the best around!
I’m so very pleased I did the ICMG course in 2019 at Sue Oliver’s Dog Grooming Studio. My business has gone from strength to strength and I’m still enjoying every second. Overall, I liked the course because the lectures, assignments and tests were all straight forward and delivered in the correct format and in the right order for a learner.
The course was beneficial in helping me reach my chosen career, gave me a sense of accomplishment and also enhanced my self-confidence. I went on to win ‘Rising Star’ in the second year of starting my course and opening my business and also, very recently, awarded PDBUK 2023 Dog Grooming Winner! This in itself is much more than I ever anticipated and I would never have gained this without enrolling on the course.
I have some wonderful customers’ and most have been with me since I first started grooming. I’m fully booked and I have a waiting list too! A lot of my customers’ didn’t realise that not all dog groomers are trained or qualified, this made a great difference in the type of customers I’ve gained and most of all have retained.
The venue at Sue Oliver’s Dog Grooming is spot on, clean and very well-organised. There’s a lovely tea room for students which is well equipped with the necessities of making a brew and a fridge for your lunch. I used to love sitting on the back patio watching the horses in the field. All of this goes a long way to helping you enjoy more than just a dog grooming course! On top of all this, we had some fun/laughs in between learning – once I’d completed my course, I really did miss going for quite a while. Sue and her team are very approachable and willing to help you in any way they can during and afterwards. I could never have done this without you!
Sue Oliver is at the heart of ICMG (International Certified Master Groomer) and not only promotes top class grooming, but a gentle and kind approach to the handling of clients beloved pets. As head of ICMG in UK, I cannot recommend her highly enough.
